Supporting Wāhine in Ōtautahi since 2020

About

By Women for Women

Aotearoa Multicultural Women Association (AMWA) is a not-for-profit volunteer organisation aimed at empowering and helping women in Otautahi Christchurch through engagements, events, and workshops. Our aim is to empower and support all wahine (women) from all backgrounds who call Aotearoa home, regardless of ethnicity, language, religion, country of origin, etc.

AMWA is 100% volunteer-run, by women for women.

English Socialisation

@Hornby Community Centre (fortnightly Tuesdays, 10.30am to 12pm)

In partnership with Hornby Community Care Centre, we hold general communication English classes fortnightly. The sessions aim to help migrant women regardless of visa status to improve their English communication skills to enable them to integrate better in Aotearoa New Zealand. We believe that this will not only empower the women in their daily lives and improve their opportunities, but it will also improve the quality of their lives as they can participate in more activities such as volunteer work and/or have paid employment.

Kai & Korero

(Food & Chit Chat)

@Hornby Community Centre (fortnightly Tuesdays, 10.30am to 12pm) & Phillipstown Community Hub (last Friday of the month, 6pm to 8pm)

We hold kai and korero sessions where women of all ages and backgrounds can socialise, network, connect and make friends to curb isolation and improve mental and overall health, as well as encourage integration and understanding of different cultures. We often invite guest experts and/or collaborate with other organisations and hold workshops or information sessions where women can gain new skills and knowledge and/or ask questions in areas such as education (from MOE), health and medical access, finance, and budgeting too.

Walking Groups

Various locations, different times, as planned

If you are interested in tramping, trekking and hiking, join our walking groups! Organised on an informal basis and open for families (yes, partners and children!) to join, the group will explore some of the most beautiful tracks and enjoy the scenic views around Canterbury.

Go at your own pace and choose your difficulty levels. Enjoy nature, participate in a healthy family-friendly and low-cost activity, and make new friends!
